Track your affiliate links to maximize sales
Most affiliate programs provide a way to track affiliate links, including the same link on different websites. Make sure you take advantage of tracking IDs to optimize your affiliate campaigns.
Setting up affiliate tracking IDs
A basic affiliate link includes your affiliate ID. However, many affiliate programs offer the option to add a subID. For example, suppose your affiliate link was YOURID.PRODUCT.COM. You might be able to set up separate links such as YOURID.PRODUCT.COM?p=EMAIL and YOURID.PRODUCT.COM?p=WEBSITE. You would get credit for both links, but you would be able to which sales came from your email campaign, and which came from your website. Maybe you want to ditch one and focus on the other. Or maybe you want to spend time improving the weaker method.
A good affiliate program will have a tracking system for you. Even Clickbank offers basic subID tracking functionality. Make sure to take full advantage of this functionality. You should descriptive subIDs, or better yet, keep an Excel spreadsheet that contains all your affiliate codes and the related link, email, or ad campaign.
Affiliate tracking research
Research is essential to making the most money with affiliate marketing. Often, the difference between profits and loss is intelligent optimization. Write down how much time or money you spend on each campaing, as well as how much money you earn from each one. Keep your winners and cut your losers, just like for stocks. Although the importance of balancing costs and profits is most obvious when you have large advertising costs, like with Adwords, realize that TIME is another significant cost. Do not ignore it.
